In Chaapter 3, the shooting of Candy's dog is a clear example of mercy killing. Many people, even though they love their pets are very attached to them, have them put down when they get old, or are sick and in pain.

a. List the arguments set forth by Carlson and Candy as they debate whether or not to shoot the dog. Do you think the dog should have been shot?

b. Try to imagine yourself in Candy's place. Describe how you feel about your loyal old friend. What would you have done to take into consideration when trying to decide whether or not to let Carlson shoot your dog.

c. How do you think Candy feels after losing his constant companion? What similarities are there between Candy and his dog and George and Lennie. What important differences?
