Re: Newsela

In HONOLULU, Hawaii last June, Richard Pyle was scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean. He found a tiny pink fish, about the size of a toy race car. It had a bluish-red spot on its fin. Pyle is a marine biologist that knows all about the sea. He had never seen this creatures   before so he went in for a closer look. Richard had just found a new species of fish.Pyle decided the spot looked like the symbol of Barack Obama's 2008 campaign for president.President Obama is from Hawaii. His home state has not named anything in his honor yet. So, Pyle decided to name the fish after him. The fish has been official named Tosanoides obama. Since June, scientists have found just five Obama fish there. Scientists say most of the fish live below 300 feet. Divers cannot safely explore under 300 feet. That could be part of the reason scientists are only now beginning to find them.

Coral is a plantlike creature that lives deep on the ocean floor. It grows into big colonies, which is called a coral reef. Millions of underwater animals live and eat inside coral reefs, making for colorful scenes. Normally the coral is a bright pink or orange. The Great Barrier Reef in the ocean around Australia is the largest and most famous reef on Earth. The reef stretches for 1,400 miles. Temperatures in 2015 and 2016 were the hottest ever recorded on Earth. Heat is not good for corals. It causes them to bleach. Bleached coral is more likely to become diseased. It can take more than 10 years for a coral to recover from disease. If bleaching does not stop, the coral can die."It broke my heart to see so many corals dying on northern reefs on the Great Barrier Reef in 2016,” said Hughes. The world's nations met in Paris in 2015 to discuss global warming to reduce fossil fuels and help the reef get back to normal.

Re: Newsela

Giant jellyfish have been taking over the New Zealand coastline. It's an event that has been linked to warmer seas and fewer predators. Jellyfish have appeared in large numbers along miles of coastline. In the last month their mass landings have been reported at beaches on New Zealand's two largest islands.“New Zealand can probably expect to see more of these landings," she said. She expects jellyfish to take advantage of excellent breeding conditions in the oceans. She added that the conditions help them grow in "super abundance.” She said jellyfish landings in large numbers are always interesting. They give scientists more opportunities to study the creatures up close. Gershwin said New Zealand’s native jellyfish could give a sting, but were not life-threatening. She said the main problems they caused were disruptions to fish farms.

Re: Newsela

The lionfish looks beautiful on the outside, with its orange and white stripes and spotted fins. However, it is causing major problems in the island of Bermuda. Scientists call the lionfish an invasive species. Invasive species are plants and animals that thrive in areas where they don't naturally live. They are usually brought to new areas by humans, either by accident or on purpose. Sometimes these spices will kill native species and will disappear forever. The lionfish has no natural predators hunting them. That means they can simply multiply and take over their new land. Now, new forms of technology such as robots are helping to root out unwanted creatures. The lionfish has spread all over the Caribbean, through the Gulf of Mexico and up the U.S. East Coast as far north as New York's Long Island. Its venomous spines are dangerous to touch. The lionfish is not hunted that mean this fish can eat any thing it likes. A new underwater robot is targeting the lionfish. It was created by Colin Angle. He runs a company called IRobot, which makes the Roomba vacuum cleaner. The new robot is called Guardian LF1. It uses a gentle shock to stun the lionfish. Then, it gets sucked into a tube. sicentis this robot can help the lionfish stay away from native species and help other fish not go extincted.

Re: Newsela

When the movie "Finding Nemo" was popular in 2003, many parents and children could not wait to buy a cute little Nemo fish. Sadly, many of the orange clownfish quickly died. Animal activists and pet shop owners are worried the same thing will happen with "Finding Dory." The Disney Pixar movie comes out in June. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is telling families to buy stuffed animal Dories instead of the real thing. A Disney spokeswoman said that Disney is working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. They are creating a program to save the tang. Marcye Sweeney owns Sea in the City, an aquarium supply store in Orlando, Florida. She vowed she will not sell any blue tang. They are also called Pacific palette surgeonfish.Thousands of clownfish died after 'Finding Nemo. People will tell you that you can set up an aquarium immediately and raise these fish, but they are generally wrong. It's not that easy." There are stores that sell the blue tang online. Some of the online stores include a warning that large saltwater tanks are needed. One site advertised a small blue tang for $50. people are really nervous about this movie coming out and how it will effect the Blue Tang population.

Re: Newsela

The deep oceans cover more than half the globe. The freezing water contains valuable treasures in the form of rocks and minerals. They have never been touched by humans. However, this might all be about to change. Experts believe we are entering a period of deep seabed mining. Machines will be going under water to dig out some of the precious rocks and minerals. A group called the International Seabed Authority, or ISA, is in charge of the underwater world. It has been giving governments and companies permission to explore under the oceans. This has worried conservationists, or people who care about taking care of the environment. They believe the ocean's natural state must be protected.Last month, a group of scientists asked ISA to stop giving out new mining permits. The group said it wants to protect some underwater areas. People want to help the environment and safe what we have left of the oceans.

Re: Newsela

Off the coast of California, two groups are fishing the same waters crab fisherman and whales. It has been causing problems for the whales. So far this year, 25 whales have been trapped in fishing lines. In 2014, at least 30 whales became trapped. That's almost twice as many as in 2013. It is mostly gray whales and humpbacks that get tangled in fishing lines. Crab fishermen drop traps to the sea floor. The traps are attached to buoys. The buoys float on the ocean's surface. Whales can get tangled in the lines that connect the traps and the buoys. Jennifer Renzullo is a scientist at the University of California. She explained why more whales have become tangled. Humpback and gray whales that tend to migrate through areas such as Monterey Bay have been spending more time there,” Renzullo said. At the same time, the number of crabs was very high there this year. The fishing population is vary high causing the whales to get trapped. People have started campaigns to stop the fishing in that area and start a protection program for all the whales.

The blue whale is the largest living mammal on the planet females growing up to 25m and males up to 24m. Now scientists are figuring out how they got so big. Scientists say the whales probably started out being only 6 to 10 feet long. This means they grew to 82.021 in who knows how long. Baleen whales have existed for 36 million years. Yet, they have only been giants for a small part of this time. Scientist wanted to find out how whales got so big in this time they have study more than 63 species of whales. They used measurements from skulls of whales. They also looked at the lengths of 13 living species of whales. Then, they looked at the whale family tree. Next this information was put into many computers. These computers used math to determent how long the whales would be. This trait of massive size is called gigantism. It seems that baleen whales had been gradually changing in size for 30 million years. A big change began to take place between 4.5 million and a few hundred thousand years ago.

Re: Newsela

Last year thousands of starfish have stared to die. A disease has killed the starfish from Alaska all the way to Mexico.Scientists say they’ve never seen a disease this bad in the ocean.Sea stars started dying in Washington state in 2013 and have gotten out of control ever since. Starfish have even stared dying in aquariums. But team of scientists announced a discovery. The team figured out what is killing the starfish. It is a virus. This wasn't new sea stars in museums going back to 1942 have it. That means the virus has been in the Pacific Ocean for 72 years. This disease is know as the wasting syndrome. At least 20 different ocean animals have it. Scientists now know what is causing this virus now they need to why is spreading so quickly. Scientist have a new hope more sea stars have reproduced they hope this is the new way for theses species to fight back.

Re: Newsela

In HONOLULU, Hawaii in the Pacific ocean corals grow slower than any other coral in the world. Scientists find that when coral becomes unhealthy its hard to bring new health corals back into the ocean. In Hawaii scientists are finding that growing bigger pieces of corals is much faster and have a better change of surviving. The corals start out as tiny as a fingernail and over time grow about a foot every year. This coral nursery takes corals from the ocean and chopped into tiny pieces so it can grow faster and stronger. Once the coral is grown they relisted back into the ocean minerals are also added to help the coral to grow fast. Scientist hope that this will be a new start for the ocean and hope that everyone is doing coral nursery's around the world to help the oceans.

Re: Newsela

The countries of the world agreed to protect the high seas. It represents about 58 percent of our planet’s oceans. Its rich marine life is dying off. Dangerous fishing methods cause much of the threat to the high seas. Most of the deep sea fishing is done by heavy nets which are scraped across the seafloor. Estimated that 90 percent of some types of large fish, such as tuna and swordfish, have disappeared from the seas. Underwater oil and gasses hold problems polluting the waters with plastic. To stop this Country's have agreed to develop a set of rules. These rule would help the endangered species by not over fishing in areas. Their may be no agreement to close down high sea fishing buy an effort is being made. Who knows when this will come to a stop but for now the government is trying there best to put an end to over fishing.

Re: Newsela

Off the waters of California sharks have been seen more this year. In southern California the grate white shark began making its way to the beaches. An 35 year old lady was swimming off San Onofre State Beach in San Diego, California as all of a sudden a shark bit off her leg.She was seriously injured. Chris Lowe has been studding sharks at the California State University in Long Beach, California. Chris is also a teacher and runs a center at the university to study sharks called the Shark Lab. He believes that this shark accidentally attacked her.Typically young great white sharks eat fish and rays. In California however, the shark population is doing well. Some people spotted a group of four 6 to 8 foot great whites near the Southern California beach. When young sharks have attacked it has mostly been a swimmer who went far out in the water. The sharks probably mistake the swimmer for food. These attacks are not a likely occurrence but make sure to stay safe and not go beyond your limits.

Re: Newsela

A giant shipworm is about 3 feet long slimy and shiny black with a pink end. Discovered in the mud of a lagoon in the Philippines, the giant shipworm is the first living animal of its kind scientists have seen. Scientists have known about it for more than 200 years thanks to fossils. These shipworms were found in little tubes the size of baseball bats where they live. A giant shipworm lives in the mud inside a tube that the animal makes itself. If they want to grow, they have to open an end of the tube. The more they want to grow the deeper they have to go.The team found a clue about the location of the animals in a video of a Philippine television news report. The scientist from the Philippine found a bunch of the tubes in a lagoon full of rotting wood. Divers found tubes pointing up around 10 feet below the water. Most of each tube is buried in the mud. This discovery was existing for the scientist and they will be able to learn more about these new animals.

Re: Newsela

Scientists discovered a huge sea creature in Hawaii last summer. In HONOLULU, Hawaii A team of scientists on a deep sea expedition discovered a sea sponge the size of a minivan. They say this is the largest known sponge on earth. Sponges are creatures that provide homes for other sea life. Sponges clean large amounts of sea water and remove material other animals in the ocean don't eat. the team of scientists made this discovery about 7,000 feet down in the water. The team was surprised to spot a  bluish white and looked like a brain. Scientists in Hawaii studied the sponge for about a year before sharing their finding to the public. According to scientists some of the large sponges found in more shallow waters are thought to be over 2,300 years old. There are more thing to be discovered in the depths of the ocean.

Re: Newsela

Scientists have discovered a rich undersea world in the waters of Hawaii. Deep sea coral reefs are home to many fish and plant life. Deep reefs are those found from 100 to 500 feet down. Coral is the most popular thing in coral reefs there home to 1000 of fish and when algae grown on these corals is a source of food. Scientists say the newly discovered algae meadows support more fish than any other place in Earth’s seas. They are also home to many kinds of fish not found elsewhere. scientists did not know much about deep reefs and only been studying them for 5 years. The deep reefs could help us protect our oceans and might be able to save our shallow reefs.

Re: Newsela

The jaguar is the largest living member of the cat family in America. And is the third largest in the world. The cats coats coat ranges from yellow-brown to reddish brown and is covered with black spots and rosettes or rings. This big animal can range from 6 to 4 feet in the body and the head can grown to 18 to 30 inches long. The females cat usually weigh less around 100-130 pounds and the males can be around 150-200 pounds. Their diet includes fish, frogs, turtles, monkeys, birds, deer, small alligators and cattle. The jaguars live on there own they also fight for the territory by themselves males have between 8 and 80 square miles and females have between 4 and 27 square miles. Theses cats are endanger and only a few 100 left. This is because of human activities like over hunting and clearing there habitat. Today lots of programs have been made to help these animals be safe and not killed. In result of this numbers have gone up and are increasing to this day.

Re: Newsela

Whale sharks are huge animals but they are not easy to find or study. Scientists still do not know much about them. Scientists spent several weeks diving with whale sharks in the Galapagos Islands. The scientists tried new tools for studying the spotted creatures. whale sharks are still sharks. They usually grow between 20 and 52 feet and can weigh more than 20 tons. That is bigger than a double-decker bus. They have wide, flat heads. Their dark-blue bodies are covered in dots that help them hide in the blue waters. After being endanger by over hunting they are now facing extinction. Marine biologist have being taging the sharks to find out where they have been going to give birth only one pregnant whale shark has ever been found in 1995. Many scientists hopes the sharks can be saved and come out of extinction.

SoFi looks like a fish and swims like a fish but its a robot this robot was developed by scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its motions are designed to look like a real fish. Scientists published a study about SoFi on March 21. They tried this robot out near the islands of Fiji in the South Pacific Ocean. It swims up, down, left, right and forward, all at the command a
controller. The robot can handle water depths of about 60 feet and blends in with the other fish without scaring them. The new robotic fish might be very useful to Scientists and to find new life.

Baby turtles have been spotted on Versova Beach, near the Indian city Mumba. This spot is vary special to all turtles. these turtles are none as Olive Ridley turtles. Their appearance has brought joy to many. It is the first time they have been spotted on the beach in many years. Thanks to everyone who cleaned up this beach for years. Their nesting process is known as arribada. The eggs all hatch around the same time and they crawl out to the ocean. In the past few weeks at least 80 baby have hatched and gone into the sea were thy will start there new life. The beach was once a dump covered in shin deep plastic and garbage. Now it is nearly spotless. Thanks to two years of people cleaning this beach up for the young Olive Ridley turtles. Some people have started education programs to teach members of the community about different ways of getting rid of their waste. They hope this will help members keep the earth clean.

Japanese snow monkey have attracted tourist for years.  more than 500 people a day come an see these monkeys. These monkeys have been bathing in hot springs. The monkeys live in Jigokudani Monkey Park near Yudanaka, Japan. They have become known for their bathing habit. The monkeys are cold. Dipping in the hot springs helps them keep warm during winter. There are many heath concerns about the monkey and people using the same springs. There are also less stress on these animals the weeks they bathed in hot springs. The scientists found that their presence seemed to have no effect. The animals' stress levels did not go up.

Mr. Trash Wheel is a googly-eyed water wheel that is power by solar power . His job is to scoop up trash from storms or people  littering in the ocean. The waterfront is a huge tourist attraction. It is home to the National Aquarium and several art and science museums. It wants to make the water clean enough to swim in by 2020 and has been trying since 2012. It has collected more than 1.5 million pounds of trash since 2014. They also provide habitats for ducks, herons turtles and other water species. Community members help raise oysters off of their boat docks.

A young 13 year old boy named Brynjar Karl Birgisson built the world's largest copy of the Titanic ship made with Lego pieces. this Lego masterpiece will be shown for the first time in the U.S.A.  He originally used 56,000 blocks to make the copy but when the ship feel apart he had to use more and it took around 65,000. His ship is about 26 feet long. This ship was designed to replica the titanic that sunk in 1912 because of an iceberg. This ship has displayed in Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Germany. Now it has traveled to the Titanic Museum in Tennessee. Brynjar visited the museum Saturday, April 21 to see his work once again.
