Topic: The Hunger Games

I have recently begun reading the Hunger Games.  It is about a young woman named Katniss Everdeen who bravely volunteers to fight in the last man standing, a battle to the death, in order to protect her younger sister.  This is an annual fight, a "games" if you will, that began after the 13 districts revolted against the capital of Panem.  After the districts were beaten and one was destroyed, the government introduced these games as a reminder of when the districts went rogue and to prevent it from happening again.

Re: The Hunger Games

Katniss lives in district twelve in an already poor district, where they live in an even more impoverished area called the seam, where she lives with her grieving widow mother, and her younger sister Primrose.  Katniss reaches across the bed but cannot feel her sister lying there as she went to sleep with her mom because this was the day of the reaping.  Katniss is described to be a very outdoorsy person and a very skilled hunter with a bow and arrow.  She walks past the kitchen and finds her sister's  pet cat that was very sick and diseased when Prim found it.  This little backstory shows that she cares for her sister very much.

Re: The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games tries to show that Katniss has a difficult relationship with her mother.  After the passing of her father, Katniss' mom feels so bad for herself that she begins neglecting Katniss and Prim.  Katniss and her best friend Gale, who also lost his father, had to become the primary source of food to keep their families alive.  In the forest just outside of district twelve is where Katniss and Gale sneak off to hunt smaller game, such as rabbit, bird, squirrel, and also fish.  After feeding their families, they take their access game to the black market to sell.  This is where Katniss gets money to pay for their water, heat, and electricity.

Re: The Hunger Games

Today was the day of the reaping.  When Katniss returned from her hunt, she began getting ready for the ceremony.  Every child from twelve years of age and older would wear their nicest clothing would stand in the town square, where one male, and female child, would be picked at random to face death in the Hunger Games.  The government though offered to everyone, grains and a small some of money to anyone willing to put their names into the bowl extra times.  Although only the destitute people would actually take this offer.  Katniss and Gale took this offer, many, many times.

Re: The Hunger Games

Effie Trinket arrives in district twelve, sticking out like a sore thumb with her brightly colored capital clothing, her gold metallic hair and her glitter everywhere.  She works for the Capital and comes as an angel of death, for she is the women who would pluck the names of the unfortunate children who would partake in the hunger games.  Many peacekeepers arrive with her to ensure that everything goes well, with no riots from the crowd.  They begin the draw.  First, a boy named Peeta Mellark is pulled, the baker's son, who Katniss went to school with.  He is immediately directed to the front of the stage by peacekeepers.  Now it was time for the girls to be picked.  Katniss is worried about her sister Prim, even though Katniss has a much greater chance of being pulled.

Re: The Hunger Games

Effie Trinket scrapes the bowl and pulls out a slip of paper with a girl's name on it.  She calls out to the crowd, Primrose Everdeen.  Katniss is shocked, Prim does not move, and every member of her family is aghast.  Katniss, knowing the chances of survival are slim for anyone, but even less for somebody who has never been trained in combat or hunting, decides to volunteer to take her sisters' place.  It is an extreme act of courage to throw herself into an almost guaranteed death situation.  Gale rushes to the aid of a clearly emotional distraught Prim, who will publicly watch her sister die.  Katniss walks up the stage where her and Peeta Mellark shake hands and are taken to a room to say goodbye to their family and friends before heading to the capital.

Re: The Hunger Games

Katniss first meets with her Mother and sister.  Katniss takes a rather aggressive tone towards her mother telling her that she can't zone out and not raise Prim if Katniss dies, just like she did before when the mine explosion took her husband, and Prim and Katniss' father.  She then meets Gale, who she asks to help look after her family.  She then meets her
