Topic: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl who lives in district 12 with her little sister and mother.  Her little sister is 12 years old and has pale skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes just like her mother. Katniss does not look like them she looks like her father, who was killed in a mine explosion, with dark hair and brown eyes.  She basically acts like the mother of the family as she always makes sure they have food to eat when she goes hunting in the woods.  Gale is a guy a couple years older then Katniss and his father also died in the mine explosion.  Him and Katniss are always in the woods together trying to catch their family supper for the nights to come.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

It is reaping day in district 12, which is the day that the capitol picks one boy and one girl from each district to go fight to death in the hunger games.  Once you are 12 your name goes into the big bowl of names to see who will be chosen to go.  Every year after that until you are 18 your name keeps going in.  The number of times your name is put in goes up every year based o your age.  The 18 year old kids have the most chance of being picked to go to the hunger games.  Katniss and Gale hate the capitol and just want to run away together and live in the forests but they have to take care of their families.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

The hunger games is just a way for the capitol to watch the district fight against each other and watch the poor ones die as soon as they get there.  Prim is getting ready as it is her first reaping and she is terrified but Katniss knows she won't get picked as her name is only in there once throughout 1000 names.  Prim is wearing the same dress that Katniss wore on her first reaping.  Katniss' mother put a dress one of her blue dresses out on the bed for Katniss to wear, which meant a lot since she never lets Katniss wear her clothes.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Everyone was dreads this day but at the same time at the end of the day all the families who's kids did not get chosen to be in the hunger games all have a huge party.  Those who get chosen shut the blinds and sit in silence all night.  Prim and Katniss can not stand by each other during the ceremony as they are in different age groups.  Prim is closer to the back since there is a less percent of chance of them getting chose then there is for Katniss to get chosen.  The boys are on the other side of the isle then the girls are so everyone is separated from each other.  All the girls and boys are standing there in terror just waiting for the reaping to begin.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Katniss keeps an eye on Prim to make sure she is doing alright as it is her first reaping.  The announcer comes to the stage for the first time this year.  She gives the same old speech that she does every year.  The history of the hunger games, the history of Panem and of course the history of the capitol.  She then reaches into the girls bowl of names and picks one name out.  She pauses for a second as it is not fun saying the candidates name.  Prim-Rose Everdeen would you please come up to the stage.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Katniss pauses, she loses her breath as she can not believe what she just heard.  The announcer repeats her word.  Prim-Rose.  All the girls around Prim spread apart to make way for the peacekeepers to take her up.  Katniss starts screaming as Prim can not leave she could not even hurt a fly.  Katniss runs out of the row grabbing onto Prim but the peacekeepers do not let her.  "I volunteer as tribute! I volunteer!" Katniss scream as she runs towards Prim and the peacekeepers.  The peacekeepers then let go of Prim and grab onto Katniss.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Katniss walks up to the announcer and stands behind her.  She can not believe what she just did for her sister.  She knew she has a better chance then Prim did at winning the hunger games but she does not know why she volunteered to fight to her death.  She is speechless as she stands on the stage in front of the whole district. Gale has Prim in his arms taking her to her mother and she is devastated.  All she can think about is what male is going to be picked from the bucket of names.  She is hoping Gale gets picked, not in a bad way but in a way of security.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

"What is your name dear" the announcer says to Katniss.  "Katniss Everdeen" Katniss mumbles under her breath struggling to get any words out.  "you must be Prim's older sister, how sweet."  Everyone in all of district 12 is dead silent.  In most districts volunteering is normal as they have been training their whole lives for the games.  The announcer asks everyone to give Katniss a big round of applause.  Instead of clapping everyone in the crowd puts there three fingers ti the lips and kiss them and solute them to her.  It is a sign of respect and saying thank you for your bravery.  This makes Katniss feels better as she knows everyone is thinking of her actions in a good way.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Katniss knows she cant start crying in front of the whole district as that would make her look weak so she stares at the ground while the announcer makes her way to the males buckets of names.  As she is starring at the ground all she can seem to think about is who is going to get picked for males and who is going to feed her family when she is gone.  A males name gets picked and Katniss recognizes the name.  "Peeta Mellark" the announcer says to the crowd.  Katniss knows him.  His family owns the bakery and Prim and Katniss trade medicines and meats with his dad quite often.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Peeta threw Katniss a piece of burnt bread once when her dad had just passed away and he was supposed to be feeding it to the pigs.  He got beat by his mother for his actions and Katniss always remembers that day as that bread was worth money and the pigs needed to be fed.  He was a tall skinny kid who Katniss knew could not fight against anyone without losing.  Katniss knew that she would nit be the first one dead now but she also knew they both had no chance of winning as there has only been one person who has ever won the games from district 12.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Haymitch is the only person who has ever won the games and he is now a drunk who lives by himself and doesn't like talking to anyone.  He is the mentor for the kids who get chosen to go to the games and he is drunk right now and on stage with both Katniss and Peeta.  He is flopping all over the stage and is in awe about a volunteer coming from district 12 because nothing interesting ever happens in district 12.  Haymitch falls off the stage and falls on his head in front of the whole district.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Peeta is now on the stage standing beside Katniss and both of them say nothing.  The mayor is on the stage saying a prayer, the same one he says every year.  After the prayer Katniss and Peeta get taken into the city council building saying their last goodbye's to their family's and friends.  Prim runs into the room with Katniss and hugs her so tight Katniss can barely breath.  Katniss and her mom hug but Katniss promises herself that she is not going to cry during goodbyes.  Gale comes into the room and it is the first time he has ever hugged her.  He gets pulled out of the room and Katniss asks him to make sure her mom and sister get fed while she is gone and to not let them starve.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

At the last moment the most unexpected person comes into the room to visit Katniss before she leaves.  Peeta's father.  He hands her some cookies and baking as he remembers her from trading with her and Prim.  This was a nice gesture Katniss thought but it is also a gesture of "please do not kill my son."  This was a nice gesture of him as his baking is very good and very expensive.  Katniss and him did not talk much when they were in there together it was just calm and peaceful.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Over the break I continued to read my book.  The guards keep getting rougher and rougher towards Katniss and Peeta and there is nothing they can do about it.  They cannot disobey the guards without getting hit or even worse then that.  Katniss knows how to shoot a bow and arrow really good so she is hoping to get one when she enters the games.  That is the only way she is going to survive is what she keeps telling herself.  She is not good at making friends so that is not an option.  Peeta is hoping to make as many alliances as he can so they can keep him alive.  Their leader who is supposed to mentor them about the game is a drunk who won the games a few years ago and is not that much help but gives them a good laugh every now and again.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch (their mentor) ride to the capital head quarters in a train that has everything anyone would need.  It is nicer then Katniss and peetas houses combined and it is just a train.  Everyone has their own rooms and their is a dinning room and a living room. Everything Katniss has ever wanted is in a train that she is riding with two men she barely even knows.  She is riding to her death in a train that she wishes she could live in for the rest of her life.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

They approach the capitols office on this dream train that Katniss does not want to leave.  She see's this train as her final wish the capitol gives her before sending her off the the games and just set her up for death.  Only 1 person wins the hunger games every year and district 12 hardly ever wins.  Districts 4,5,6 are the stronger districts and going to the games is an honor to some of them.  They have trained their whole lives to be put in that arena and kill anyone that stands in the way and all Katniss knows how to do is shoot an arrow.  Katniss does not know if she will be able to kill a person with her bow as she has only ever killed animals for food and fur.

Re: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Peeta on the other hand has never killed anything bigger then a spider in his life and Katniss knows she can survive longer then him.  Haymitch is not exactly fond of Katniss.  Her attitude is to much for him so he spends most of his time mentoring Peeta.
When they arrive at the capitol it looks a lot different then district 12.  It is a rich looking place where people who have to much money live their lives with no fear of losing food supply's and no fear of the capitol coming and bombing their whole town.  President Snow, the president of all Panem stand waiting for Katniss and Peeta to arrive on the train.  He looks very different in person then through online.  He scruffy with white hair and a white beard.
