Topic: Soul Surfer

I chose to read a new book because it has caught my eye the past few days and I believe I will be highly attentive toward this novel. A couple years ago I watched this movie but in all honest I deeply think the book with go into far more detail. So far i have only read up to page 25 and they were introducing the main characters and the setting and giving you some background knowledge about this story before going straight in. Bethany Hamilton is the author of the book and also the main character because this is a non fiction and she is explaining what she went through and her career in surfing. This story takes place in Kauai when Bethany was a child growing through her teenage years. Bethany's father always use to go surfing when he was a kid, even when it was freezing and snowy outside he would rip to his friends house, grab a surfboard and get into the water. I haven't read past this yet but I am eager to hear more about Bethany and her journey in the sea.

Re: Soul Surfer

As i continue reading, I found out that Bethany's best friend Alannah loves surfing just as much as Bethany does. Later on in the book, Alannah and Bethany get an invite to go night surfing with some of their other pals. Bethany's would not want her going out in the water that late at night because they would most likely be worried of what dangerous acts might happen, yet they did not know she would be going. Bethany and Alannah had a sleepover at Bethany's and decided to sneak out and meet up with their friend Keoke who then took them to the beach. They had bundles of fun listening to their favorite tunes, lighting up the dark with colorful glow sticks and as an outstanding finish, fireworks lit up the night sky. They returned home after a long while at the beach. Early the next morning, the girls were very tired and it was unusual for them to wake up that late. Somehow bethany's mom had found out where they had been and discussed this with the girls. Bethany ended up spilling and explaining why they decided to sneak out and apologized for the entire occurrence. While her mom forgave them and decided to let it slip, Alannah's family pulled in the driveway ready and eager to go for another surfing trip with the girls. Excitement filled them as they grabbed their boards and hopped in the vehicle. This is how far I got in the book and so far it has been splendid, she has done a very good job with catching the reader eye leaving them wanting more.

Re: Soul Surfer

I read a few more pages at home and this story now takes us to when the tragic moment hit. Laying in the water, Bethany awaited for a big wave to come so she could ride it but sneakily and suddenly and had been attacked by a shark. The shark had popped out of the water and jumped at her arm causing her to loose a lot of blood. Her father rushed to the water to go get Bethany and take her into shore while her younger brother dialed 911 as a call for help. Her brother then informed his mom about what happened as her dad began to wrap his swim shirt around her arm to resist the flow of blood and keep her breathing before they starting heading to the hospital to seek medical attention. As the reader, the author has my attention completely and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Re: Soul Surfer

As Bethany's dad was having surgery on his knee and before the surgeon could get to work they got an unexpected and sudden message. A nurse had busted in the room and told them that they needed to clear the room because a 16 year old had been attacked by a shark. Bethany's dad told the doctor to go find out whom the child was. Bethany was rushed into the room her dad was in on a hospital bed with a massive blood loss and her dad started to panic when he realized the girl was his daughter.

Re: Soul Surfer

Bethany now didn't have her right arm which left her devastated. While she was watching television, she saw a channel about a surfing competition she took place in from a while ago. She switched the channel and it was talking about how she had been attacked by a shark. Alannah walked in going on about how panicked she was and how happy she is that Bethany was alive, followed by the doctor and her family.

Re: Soul Surfer

Bethany left the hospital and on her way home her family had left her a bunch of small surprises which warmed her heart. Her dog was very happy to see her and there were surfboards with small messages such as " we love you Bethany " and "welcome home". When they arrived back at the house there were also a bunch of reporters who were all determined to talk to her but her dad made sure she cold get inside the house without being bothered in any way. She then had supper with her family the next day and afterwards she had gone back to the hospital to get her stitches and bandage taken off.

Re: Soul Surfer

I read more of the book and got to the part where Bethany started crying to the image of her arm of the thought that she wouldn't be able to surf ever again. A while went past and some reporters told Bethany they would pay her to try on a prosthetic arm and she agreed but when she attempted to push up on the board she was stopped because you cannot put that much force on the arm. She made them take it off and proceeded to go back into her house in tears. Her dad began to drill holes into her surfboard and installed a rope to make a handle so she could get a grip when she goes to dive. He was dong this so she would still be able to surf.

Re: Soul Surfer

As I continue reading I discover that they may have found the beast that bit Bethany's arm off. They grabbed the surfboard and it was a perfect fit. A couple days pass by and she decides she wants to start surfing again so she begins to train without her arm and the handle her dad made actually worked very well for her. There's a competition coming up in which she wants to participate in and become as strong as she was when she had both of her arms.

Re: Soul Surfer

Now at the competition, Melina was their hardest competition. All the surf competitors are all sitting on their board waiting to catch a wave. The ocean is calm and flat that day and that there is nothing out there worth surfing. Bethany than felt something coming so she decided to start paddling out while all the other surfers stayed back because they couldn't see any waves. The time is running out and a huge wave then came in. Bethany was the farthest out so she gets the wave before anyone else did. Bethany stands up onto her board and got sucked into a huge barrel wave where she is pretty much hidden by the water. The timer for the contest went out but Bethany is still in the wave. The people began worrying that she would be stuck in the wave. Then by surprise she finally came out and everyone started yo cheer That would be the highest scoring wave of the day but it didn't count because the timer had finished before she appeared.

Re: Soul Surfer

After this event, Bethany's family, friends and even some strangers started to complain that it should have counted, but yet the judges did not change their mind. They proceeded to line up first to third place, Melina in first, Alannah in second followed by Bethany in third. Melina pulled Bethany up to the first place platform and said " the judges may not have counted the last wave but I did ". They both gripped the trophy and the audience started cheering loudly. Bethany thanked her and they all went home with pride. While Bethany was walking back to her family they gave her the biggest hug and told her how proud of her they were then took her home later on. I haven't read past this but the book is almost over.

Re: Soul Surfer

I have now finished the book and I loved it dearly, it was a great, inspiring story to read. The end of the book concludes with Bethany's family celebrating how strong she was and the big win she took in the surfing contest. Now to this day Bethany still spends her time out in the blue waters with her surfboard and a smile.
