Topic: The Fault In Our Stars By John Green

The Fault In Our Stars is a fabulous book about a young teenage girl who has been diagnosed with lung cancer and attends a cancer support group. Hazel is 16 and is reluctant to go to the support group, but she soon realizes that it was a good idea. Hazel meets a young boy named Augustus Waters. He is charming and witty. Augustus has had osteoarthritis, a rare form of bone cancer, but has recently had the all clear.

Hazel and Augustus embark on a roller coaster ride of emotions, including love, sadness and romance, while searching for the author of their favorite book. They travel to Amsterdam in search to find Peter Van Houten the author of An Imperial Affliction. While on their trip Augustus breaks some heartbreaking news to Hazel and both of their worlds fall apart around them.

Hazel recovers from the problem caused by her medication, and her parents finally decide to go to Amsterdam. Hazel, Augustus and Hazel’s mom all board the plane and make a plan to sleep for half of the flight so they are ready for the day at 8 in the morning. This is Augustus’s first time flying so he is scared but as soon as the nose of Thebes plane lifts off the ground he is amazed by the sight and feeling of flying. When they arrive in Amsterdam, Hazel and Augustus go on a romantic dinner date on a cruise, paid by Van Houten. I have been really into this novel because it has such a great story behind it and it’s one of the first books I’ve actually been looking forward to reading.

While in Amsterdam, Hazel and Gus find out that the author of an imperial fiction, is actually an alcoholic. Van Houten hasn’t written anymore books because he started drinking more and more. His house was a mess with garbage bags full of unopened fan mail, a wooden dining table with only two chairs etc. Van Houten is later angered by the two visitors and starts mocking Hazels cancer causing tears. The assistant apologizes for everything and Hazel and Gus leave the household.

Van Houten’s assistant then takes Hazel and Augustus to the Anne Frank museum and enjoy the night since the author turned out to be a creepy drunk man. In the museum, Hazel and Gus share a passionate kiss which brought them closer together. They returned home and immediately went to visit Issac and their families who they missed very much. In the 3 days they were gone, Isaac went blind and this was very troubling for him considering he broke up with his girlfriend.

A few days later Gus told Hazel to meet him at a gas station as soon as she possibly could, it was early in the morning, around 2 am, so she rushed over and found Augustus in a car puking everywhere. Hazel called 911 discovering that Gus has been infected and doesn’t have many days to live. They went to the church a couple days after this happened and Isaac and Hazel made speeches and said hem in front of Gus so he could know what his funeral would be like. These pages were very dramatic and upsetting but I am still very eager to read what happens next.

Continuing in the novel, Gus passes away and this event has family members, friends and many others in tears. This was a very sad section of the book. They all attend his funeral, tragic. When Hazel was leaving the funeral, Van Houten got in the passenger seat of hazels car and gave her a note and also apologizes for everything that’s happened including their visit in Amsterdam. Hazel tells him to leave and when she opens the note, she finds out it was written by Gus to her, he was telling her how much she meant to him and how she impacted his life. I haven’t read past this part I have yet to continue. I found this adorable but very sad.

Re: The Fault In Our Stars By John Green

A few mornings after Hazel wakes up in panic because she had dreamed of being alone and boat less in a huge lake. Her mom was luckily by her side to help and was holding hazels phone because her friend Kaitlin was on the other side waiting to talk. When she finally picked up the phone Kaitlin asked her about Gus and what it was like being in love even though he passed away only a few short days ago. They started talking about memories and photos hazel shared with him but she realized that Gus never sent her letters and thought those few missing pages in his notebook might have been sent to someone else such as Peter Van Houten. Hazel jumped with excitement and said thanks for the help and hung up. She grabbed her computer and emailed Peters assistant. When lidweji finally responded she replied saying that she would go over to his house the next morning and find the letters even though she resigned. The next day hazel got an email saying she found the letter and it was being sent in the mail to her but she also sent photos of it so hazel could read it right then and there. The letter might not have been for hazel but it was about her and that's hoe the story ends.
