Topic: Eldest by Christopher Paolini
Eldest is the second book in the Inheritance series. The first book was Eragon, and I really enjoyed reading it. This book is set right after the battle at the end of the first book. Eragon has a big, painful scar down his back from his fight with the Shade, Durza. Three days after the battle, Eragon and Saphira go out to meet Ajihad. He has been traveling the tunnels under the Beor Mountains with Murtagh and the Twins in the days since the battle and was supposed to come back that day. A few people were out waiting, including Orik and Arya. They saw Ajihad's group come out of the tunnel on the other side of Farthen Dur. Saphira noticed that there was a group of Urgals coming up behind the travelers. Eragon jumped on Saphira and they went as fast as possible to the disturbance with Arya running below them. They quickly killed four of the men leaving only Ajihad, Murtagh, and the Twins. A mist came and surrounded the four survivers and when it cleared away, the Urgals were leaving and no one was left standing. When they got there, Eragon went to Ajihad and, with his dying breath, Ajihad told Eragon to make sure the Varden didn't fall apart with all the loss they had. After a few moments, Saphira realized that Murtagh and the Twins weren't there. The Urgals must have taken them. The especially concerning part was the fact that Urgals never kept prisoners or hostages. Arya was the only one fast enough to possibly catch them, so she went into the tunnel to pursue the Urgals. When Arya arrived back in Farthen Dur, she brought bad news. She had found one of the Twins robes and Murtagh's tunic torn and bloody by a black chasm. The only answer was that they were gone. They died. The next day, Eragon was summoned to the Council of Elders. On the council was Ajihad's right-hand man Jormindur, a tall man named Umerth, a broad man named Falberd, and two women named Sabre and Elessari. They decided that the new leader of the Varden should be Ajihad's daughter, Nasuada. The council asked Eragon to be present after Ajihad's funeral when Nasuada would formaly be asked to be the new leader of the Varden. They also asked Eragon to swear fealty to the Varden.
