Beatrice Prior stands in front of the mirror as her mother, Natalie, trims her blond hair. She lives in a world that is split into five factions: Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Candor, and Amity. Her family belongs to the Abnegation faction. Beatrice reveals that this is the day she and her brother Caleb will take their aptitude tests. These tests are taken by children when they turn 16 to determine which faction they will belong to. At school, Beatrice is pushed down by an Erudite boy and notes that kids in the Abnegation faction have recently become a target for kids from other factions. She moves to a window to watch the Dauntless kids arrive at school by leaping off a moving train and feels drawn to them. The aptitude tests begin after a morning of normal classes and lunch. Students are not allowed to prepare for the test in any way or speak about it with other students. Beatrice feels apprehensive, not knowing what to expect. Caleb is called away first and comes back looking pale and shaky. When it's Beatrice's turn, she enters a mirrored room staffed by a Dauntless woman named Tori. In the center of the room is a chair placed next to a machine. Beatrice sits in the chair and drinks a vial of a clear liquid that Tori offers her.
